(FAQs) Frenquently Asked Questions Frozen Canine Semen

Welcome to the Valley Veterinary Hospital reproductive information page. We have been assisting breeders for many years and for the last five years with Synbiotics frozen canine semen. We are also happy to be one pf the 60+ Synbiotics centers world wide, and the only center in the Atlantic Provinces.

Services that we offer our clients include:

PennHIP radiographs
DNA kits are available

Genetic counseling

As a specialty service we also offer chilled and frozen semen collections and inseminations.

Male Fertility

We offer for the boys:

Collection and evaluation of semen, chilled and frozen semen collections, and general stud dog management (including Brucellosis testing). The evaluation portion examines the volume. color, motility, numbers and the morphology of the semen sample. It is best also to remember that not every dog's semen will act the same during the chilling and freezing process even if a fresh sample looks adequate. It is recommended that if this is a stud dog you are hoping to preserve for a period of time that his semen be evaluated for the ability to withstand the chilling and freezing process, depending on how you will be offering him at stud.

Female Fertility

We offer for the girls:

Pre-breeding testing for Brucellosis and Mycoplasma as required, progesterone and LH Timing for ovulation (and easy to figure out whelping dates), pregnancy monitoring, Caesarian sections, and pediatric care for wee ones after they are born. We can provide vaccinations, deworming, and health plans for your individual pups.

With the insemination for your girl we offer routine vaginal AI's and intrauterine surgical inseminations. The surgical inseminations are done on an as needed basis depending on the timing of your girl. With this option your dog is under general anesthesia and we directly deposit the sperm into each horn of her uterus. This provides the maximum amount of contact between the sperm and the mature ova. The girls are usually up and able to go home about one hour after surgery.

Conception rates can have many factors: the bitch's fertility, the condition of her uterus, the ovulation timing, the actual insemination technique used and the quality and handling of the semen.

Currently we have an average of 85% pregnancy rate and an average litter of five (litter sizes from singletons to 12).

We also offer long term, on site storage, as well as shipping and receiving semen.
