Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (VSMT)

Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy is a manual treatment technique applied to an animal's individual joints that are intended to restore joint motion, reduce pain, adhesions and dysfunction.

Overview

Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (VSMT) is a manual treatment technique applied to an animal's individual joints using quick, controlled thrusts that are intended to restore joint motion, reduce pain, adhesions and dysfunction. These thrusts have the goal of affecting the surrounding muscles and nerves. VSMT can also involve mobilizations where a joint is moved gently through its normal range of motion, but no thrust is delivered.

Who Can Perform VSMT?

Licensed veterinarians who have undergone additional training in spinal manipulation therapies. In some provinces, Chiropractors (DC) who have undergone additional training can also work on animals.

What conditions can VSMT benefit?

  • Supporting optimal performance in athletic dogs

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain

  • Prevention of Injuries

  • Rehabilitation Post-Surgery or Injury

  • Post-Dental procedures

  • Urinary Incontinence

  • Senior Pet Care

VSMT is NOT recommended in any patient that has not had a thorough examination and proper diagnostics performed. VSMT is not a replacement for proper pain control and conventional medical management.

VSMT Protocol

Most patients will receive a treatment every 1-3 weeks for three treatments initially, and then extended to every 4-12 weeks as needed for maintenance therapy. Some patients will not need further treatments beyond the initial sessions. Stretches and strengthening exercise handouts may be provided to the client to continue care at home.
